XENON Systems Selects Adaptec for Post-production Film Application
XENON Systems of Melbourne, Australia provides high-performance server and storage solutions to film and post-production studios, TV stations, government organizations, and high-tech companies. One of XENON’s key challenges is finding low-cost, high-performance solutions that allow everybody in the film production process to access data as they need it without long transfer times between functions.

Tackling a performance challenge Movie footage undergoes several steps in the production pipeline, from film editing to adding special effects and color correction. Moving and manipulating these files, which can range up to 5TB in size, presents a series of performance and budgetary challenges.
The typical enterprise storage solution can deliver good performance when copying large files, but performance drops as the file gets smaller. Copying over files using Samba or NFS can take several hours. A SAN is faster but only one server can attach to a logical volume at a time. With NAS, everyone can attach to the same data, but performance is an issue.
Moreover, a Tier 1 enterprise storage solution can cost $200,000 or more. |

Maximum throughput wins To solve these problems, XENON’s subsidiary, XDT, developed slingshot™, a high-performance, networked, file data replication and streaming solution that combines the performance of a SAN with the centralized storage and access of NAS.
XENON knew that the key performance indicator for its film industry customers would be slingshot’s ability to read and write multiple Film 2K data streams at a sustained rate of 320GB/s and Film 4K data streams at a sustained rate of 1.2GB/s. Finding the right RAID controller would be critical.
Adaptec Series 5 The Adaptec RAID Series 5 family of RAID controllers delivers a new level of performance with the latest PCIe connectivity, an industry-leading dual-core RAID on Chip (ROC) and a 512MB cache.
XENON tested Series 5 in slingshot and found the performance on files of all sizes to be on par or better than Fibre Channel-to-Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel-to-SAS external controllers with dedicated I/O processors. Moreover, an Adaptec-based slingshot solution costs about $30,000 – a fraction of the cost of an enterprise storage system.
XENON has also been impressed by the high port-count options available from Adaptec, as well as Adaptec’s legendary customer support and the ability to configure and manage the controllers through Adaptec Storage Manager™.
